On the Up and Up

A little bit of Heaven
Frosty the snowman lives here for sure.
Hello from the land of snow and frosting…also known as SilverStar, Canada! SilverStar is one of those magical places where you fall in love with skiing all over again…and again…and again. Imagine living in “Who-Ville” from How the Grinch Stole Christmas…Except everyone loves Christmas and the only big green monster is the Dartmouth Ski Team 🙂 Perfectly groomed trails wind endlessly through trees dipped in white frosting. Brightly colored orange and purple houses line the otherwise snowy streets and baristas at the local bakery greet you with warm mugs and cheerful Australian and English accents. Add a few spectacular morning sunrises, twinkly lights and softly falling snowflakes and you’ve found a skier’s bliss.
The morning commute!

One of the best ways to get to the race trails is to simply hop on the lift. Then take a 25 minute ripping downhill through the gumdrop forest and voila: Sovereign Lake Race Stadium.

After the SuperTour races in Sun Valley last weekend, Annie Hart and I traveled north for a chance to put on a bib and practice that whole racing thing a few more times. SilverStar welcomed us with open arms and I think we are both pretty reticent to leave. We rented a condo at the base of TubeTown and our days consist of skiing, Nor-Pining, trips to town for hot chocolate and pastries, watching epic crashes on the tubing hill, and more skiing.
Some festive Christmas decorations Annie P and I made. I sewed them to decorate our little condo on the mountain.
Annie H with the sass.
We also jumped in the Nor-Am races this weekend to test our mettle against some of the best Canadian skiers. The good news? We are both on the up and up! Annie H. cruised to the win in her quarterfinal and eventually moved on to the A-final and a 5th place finish on the day! I was thrilled to qualify in 9th and move on to the B-Final where I finished 8th. Every weekend my arm gets stronger and I am learning to celebrate the little victories-like moving out of the quarterfinals for the first time or passing someone in the finishing stretch! Tomorrow I am racing a 10km skate race and Annie plans to lead the cheer squad as I tackle some World Cup-level hills. First place promises a sweet sweater though so I’m getting ready to rip and hopefully bring home another cozy memory from SilverStar. We owe a HUGE thank you to the Dartmouth Team and BSF for helping us with wax and race support! Looking forward to a few more days in winter wonderland before heading home for the holidays. Thanks for checking in!
